I’ve recently discovered a couple of awesome tools I’m excited to share with you all.
First is PickleWatch, a popular Apple Watch app that acts as a real-time pickleball coach. It uses the watch’s sensors to analyze swings (forehand, backhand, dink, etc.) and provide instant color-coded feedback on shot quality, speed, and consistency, which helps to improve your form without needing a separate coach or phone during play. It tracks metrics like swing speed, rally length, and heart rate, syncing detailed stats, stroke charts, and trends to the iPhone app for post-match analysis, with features like haptic cues and personalized tips for all skill levels.
How it Works:
- Wear your Apple Watch: You will need to wear your Apple Watch on your dominant hand but, other than that, extra gadgets needed on the court.
- Start a session: Tap ‘Start Tracking’ in the app.
- Get instant feedback: The watch uses sensors to detect swings and gives immediate color-coded ratings (e.g., green for good, yellow for average) and haptic feedback.
- Sync to iPhone: After playing, sync your data to the iPhone app for detailed breakdowns, heatmaps, stroke charts, and overall quality scores.
Key Features:
- Smart Shot Detection: Identifies forehands, backhands, dinks, volleys, and smashes.
- Swing Analysis: Tracks speed and quality for each shot.
- Real-time Coaching: Provides immediate tips and cues during play.
- Detailed Stats: Offers session summaries, trends, and consistency tracking on the iPhone.
- No Phone Needed: Can be used independently on the watch during matches.
Key Benefits:
- Beginners: Get fundamental tips and encouragement.
- Intermediate Players: Refine technique with specific suggestions.
- Advanced Players: Gain detailed analytics for a competitive edge.
The second app I’ve been using is PB Vision, an AI-powered platform and app that analyzes recorded pickleball matches to provide players with detailed, data-driven insights for improvement, tracking stats like shot speed, placement, consistency, and errors, and offering features like video highlights, heatmaps, and shot breakdowns. It turns recorded footage into actionable data, helping players identify patterns and weaknesses they might miss, essentially acting like a virtual coach by cutting dead time and focusing on rallies.
How it Works:
- Record: Players film their pickleball matches (ensuring all four corners are visible).
- Upload: The video is uploaded to the PB Vision app or platform.
- Analyze: AI technology processes the footage, identifying players, tracking shots (drops, dinks, drives, volleys), and analyzing performance metrics.
- Review: Users get an analyzed breakdown, including stats (shot quality, depth, consistency), heatmaps of court coverage, and clips of specific shots (serves, returns, thirds).
Key Features:
- Instant Game Breakdown: Eliminates manual fast-forwarding by cutting out dead time and grouping rallies.
- Detailed Stats: Tracks serve speed, rally length, shot types, and success rates.
- Player Movement: Analyzes court coverage and agility.
- Error Identification: Pinpoints common mistakes and repeatable patterns.
- Player Ratings: Offers skill ratings to measure performance
Key Benefits:
- Faster Improvement: Provides insights for focused practice, helping players understand their unconscious habits.
- Data-Driven Training: Offers objective feedback beyond what a human coach can track in real-time.
- Easy Access: Available as a mobile app, making game review convenient.
Here are a couple of videos that show how the PB Vision app works:
I am currently using both apps but I really like the information that I am getting from PB Vision. The AI engine is amazingly accurate and provides great insights.
