Pickleball Player Ratings – UTPR

UTPR stands for USA Pickleball Tournament Player Ratings. It is the official rating system used by USA Pickleball, the national governing body for the sport of pickleball in the United States. The organization’s mission is to promote the development and growth of pickleball in the United States and its territories. In addition to promoting pickleball, the organization also provides players with rules, tournaments, and rankings.

USA Pickleball and PickleballTournaments.com collaborated to create the UTPR player rating system with the goal of improving player tournament experience. The USA Pickleball Ratings Committee works diligently to ensure that the UTPRs are current and updated on behalf of tournament players based on the tournament results provided by tournament directors.

There are three key benefits of UTPRs:

  1. UTPRs are an objective measure of a player’s skill
  2. UTPRs are used to register players in events at the correct skill level
  3. UTPRs are used to seed competitors at a tournament where UTPRs are available for:
    • Gender Doubles
    • Mixed Doubles
    • Gender Singles

There are some changes that took effect on April 1, 2021 so the video below is a bit outdated; however, it does a great job of explaining the mechanics of the UTPR system.

What changed? As of April 1, 2021 all USA Pickleball sanctioned tournaments (whether Standard or Medal-Match Plus) will get 100% credit and non-sanctioned tournament which used to get 80% credit will receive 0% credit toward your UTPR. Besides the UTPR difference, the key difference between sanctioned and unsanctioned tournaments is that sanctioned tournaments agree to abide by USA Pickleball sanctioning requirements. You can learn more about tournament sanctioning here.

How do you get a rating? Players get a rating by playing in a sanctioned tournament. When you play in your first sanctioned tournament, your initial 4-digit UTPR is based on the average of the players in your first event bracket. You can also preset your UTRP to your self-rating prior to your first tournament by contacting ratingsadmin@usapickleball.org. You can use this guide to determine your rating.

How do I find my 4-digit UTPR? If you are a USA Pickleball member, simply log in to the site and then scroll down to the section labeled “4 Digit UTPR Used For Tournament Seeding.” This is updated weekly on Fridays. If you are not a member, you can still look up your 4-digit UTPR if you have played in some tournaments on PickleballTournaments.com. Login to your account and then click the “Show My Profile” button. Scroll down to the bottom right quadrant of the page to the “UTPR 4-digit (updated weekly)” section. Your USA Pickleball UTPR may or may not match depending what is listed on the PickleballTournaments.com site depending on whether the tournaments you’ve played are sanctioned and the results are reported to USA Pickleball.

The FAQ video below addresses common UTRP questions. You can learn more about the UTPR system here. If you have other questions not covered by the video, post them in the comments and I will do my best to find answers for you.
