Keys to Better Volleys

I just watched this super helpful video from PrimeTime Pickleball so I thought I would share it with everyone. If you struggle with volleys, then you must watch this!

Best Practice:

  • Knees slightly bent
  • Toes pointed forward
  • Slight forward lean
  • Elbows are bent
  • Gentle turn (no big turn, no back swing, no big follow through)

You don’t want to hit volleys standing straight up like a board with your arms sticking straight out in front of you. Elbow and knees should have a slight bend. With your toes pointed forward, relax and be ready to hit the ball in the air. Remember to always make contact in front of you.

As Nicole points out in the video, you can practice and improve this skill no matter where you are. Here are some partner drills you can do to work on your volley technique:

  • Forehand to forehand volleys
  • Backhand to backhand volleys
  • Forehand to backhand volleys (switch roles with your partner at the end of the round)
  • Figure 8s (switch roles with your partner at the end of the round)

If you don’t have a buddy, you can also practice volleys against a wall. Drill and practice until you are comfortable with this shot and watch your game improve exponentially.
